- Amapi3D for 3DS Max V2.5
- TGS (C) 1998.
-
-
- I- Basics:
-
- Amapi3D Plug-in for 3DS Max establishes a direct link between 3D Studio Max
- and Amapi3D. The two softwares are then able to exchange objects, modify
- them, thus taking advantage of both softwares capabilities.
- The plug-in is only working under NT 4.0 when used with Amapi3D v4.1.
-
- Amapi3D for Max is generally used as follow :
-
- 1- Start 3DS Max.
- 2- Select the Utility icon in 3DS Max.
- 3- Select Amapi in the Utility scrolling menu.
-
- The Amapi3D Plug-in is now opened. It appears on the right hand-side of 3DS
- Max window. To establish the communication
- between Amapi3D and Max, you now have to launch Amapi3D.
- To achieve that you can:
-
- 4- either use the "Launch Amapi" button. A file selector Window is then
- displayed. Select the Amapi3D exe. file. Amapi3D is launched and a message :
- "Amapi is connected to 3DS Max" is displayed.
- Notice: Amapi3D's location is now entered in memory. The File Selector window
- will not appear again.
-
- 4- either start Amapi3D as usual, using the File Manager.
-
- Notice: you can proceed the other way around: i.e. launch Amapi3D before 3DS Max.
-
- If procedures are succesful, a message "Amapi is Launched", must be
- displayed beneath the "Launch Amapi" button within 3DS Max. The menu
- "Connection to Max" in the "File" scrolling menu of Amapi3D must be
- accessible.
-
- Once the communication is established, you can go from Amapi3D to 3DS Max as
- with any Windows application (Alt + Tab, Control + Escape).
-
- II- Transferring objects from 3DS Max to Amapi3D:
-
- To transfer objects from 3DS Max to Amapi3D, you just have to:
- - Click on the "Export Selected Object" button and select the object you
- want to export.
- - Click on the "Export List of Objects" button and select the objects you
- wish to export.
-
- Those buttons are available only if Amapi3D is running. More over, certain
- objects cannot be exported:
- - curves
- - cameras
- - lights
- - more generally, objects that can not be triangulated.
-
- The "Export with Modifiers Applied" button is used to export objects along
- with the modifiers that have been applied to them (bend...). Thus the
- exported object into Amapi3D is the one displayed on the screen. This
- function is not selected when using the default settings. Indeed, it is
- better to export the object without the modifiers, so as to work on the
- "rough" object. More details on this point will be found in the following
- paragraph.
-
- Exported objects are triangulated by 3DS Max. But it is possible to import
- them under different forms into Amapi3D. Select the "Connection to 3DS Max"
- menu in Amapi3D. A dialog box is displayed. There you can select/deselect the
- "Group Co-planar Polygons" option, located in the "Importation" area of the
- dialog box. This option will group the polygons having common hidding edges.
- This will improve the process of Amapi3D's tools. Here is a small
- demonstration:
- - Create a sphere in 3DS Max.
- - Export it to Amapi3D with the "Group Co-planar Polygons" option turned on.
- - In Amapi3D, apply a smoothing on the sphere.
- Delete the sphere and do the same operation again with the "Group
- Co-planar Polygons" option off.
- You can see that the smoothing worked better in the first case. Amapi3D
- succeeded in creating an Amapi3D sphere with rectangle polygons, from 3DS
- Max's triangulated sphere.
-
- III- Transfering objects from Amapi3D to 3DS Max:
-
- To transfer objects from Amapi3D to 3DS Max, you have to:
- - Select the "Connection to 3DS Max" (File menu). A dialog box is then
- displayed.
- - Select several (pressing down the control key and/or the shift) or all of
- the objects ("Select All" button) to be transfered.
- - Click on the "Export" button.
-
- The "Connection to Max " menu will be displayed only if Max is running.
- More over, curves will not be exported and objects will be exported as
- triangle polygons into 3DS Max (it will also be the case when exporting
- Nurbs).
-
- Go back to 3DS Max. Amapi3D objects now appear in the scene. There are different options when importing objects from Amapi3D.
- - "Smoothing option": when selected, any new object coming from Amapi3D will
- be smoothed accordingly to the specified smoothing angle (default setting
- is 30 degrees).
- - "Use Amapi color" option: when selected, the rendering colors of Amapi3D's
- objects wil be applied to objects imported into Max. This option is not
- selected when using the default settings. The color of importation is the
- one displayed in the rectangle next to "Use Amapi colors" option. To
- change color, click on the rectangle: a color selector is displayed.
- - "Keep Modifier when Updating Objects" option: this option allows you to
- keep the modifiers associated to 3DS Max objects. See next paragraphs for
- more details.
- This option is not allowed when "Export with Modifiers Applied" is checked
- to prevent you applying modifiers twice.
-
- IV- Keeping informations linked to objects:
-
- The exchange of objects between Amapi3D and 3DS Max is intelligent : Amapi3D
- tries to do its best to keep the maximum of informations about Max objects.
- Thus, an object coming from Max and modified in Amapi3D is not re-created
- when exported to Max, but is updated. This allow the user to keep texture,
- animation informations as well as modifiers applied to objects.
- The same process is true when exporting objects from 3DS Max to Amapi3D. An
- object exported to Amapi3D wil be updated if it as already been exported from
- 3DS Max or if it comes from Amapi3D.
- This close collaboration between both softwares allows the use of Amapi3D as
- the priviledged modeling studio of 3DS Max, as modifications are
- transparent to Max.
-
- To understand how this collaboration works you can try the following example:
- 1- Create a sphere in 3DS MAX.
- 2- Export the sphere in Amapi3D.
- 3- Use Amapi3D's Bending tool.
- 4- Export the resulting sphere into 3DS Max.
-
- The sphere is updated in 3DS Max. If the sphere had had textures and
- animation informations, those would have been kept.
- More over, modifiers applied to the sphere would have been kept if the
- "Keep Modifier when Updating Object" option was selected.
- An object created in Amapi3D, exported and modified into Max and then
- re-exported to Amapi3D would also be updated.
-
- There are limitations to this collaboration. An object cannot be updated
- once a topological modification has been applied to the object. The object
- is then re-created when exported and other informations are lost.
-
- Amapi3D Tools modifying the topology are the following:
- - smoothing,
- - deleting polygons,
- - boolean operations,
- - filleting,
- - thickness tool.
-
- Notice:
-
- Its is advised to de-select the ""Keep Modifier when Updating Object"
- option when the "Export objects with Modifiers Applied" option is on.
- Otherise, the modifiers would be applied twice when updating the object.
- The Smoothing Option is useless when updating an object. It is the smoothing
- parameters of the original object wich are kept.
- A 3DS Max object modified in Amapi3D is always converted to a mesh-type object.
- Any operation done by the Plug-in in Max can be cancelled with the
- Undo/Redo command.
-
- V- Closing the Amapi3D/Max connection:
- To close the 3DS Max/Amapi3D connection:
- - close Amapi3D or Max,
- - close the plug-in using the "Close Plug-in" button.
-
